Algae Control

Learn more about how River Rock Water Gardens can control the algae water feature.

An ecosystem pond maintains a biological balance to replicate nature. All ecosystem ponds benefit from having a small amount of algae. However, too much algae can be unsightly and unhealthy for your ecosystem pond. Here at River Rock Water Gardens, our maintenance team is equipped and ready to help provide everything you need to find the balance that nature intended.

The components of an ecosystem pond work together through equally important roles. Therefore, understanding these can help maintain control of the algae.

Recirculating the pond’s water allows oxygenation and debris to be swept into a central location. Using a series of filter mats allows a place for good bacteria to grow.

Plants are a natural filter for an ecosystem pond and feed off of the excess nutrients in a pond, which just happens to be the algae’s food source.

Adult koi consume algae as a food source. Reducing algae as well as being a delight to the eyes, koi make a great addition to a water garden or pond.

Bacteria living in the pond survive on excess nutrients in the pond’s water. The rocks and gravel provide surface area for the bacteria to call home. As excess nutrients from debris, fish waste, and decaying plants settle on the pond floor, the bacteria living on the rocks break down the waste.

Ecosystems take time to thrive. Bacteria can take up to six weeks to colonize which means sometimes we just have to wait and let nature do its work. After all when we replicate nature, nature creates its own balance.
